I’m currently shopping for an area rug, and whenever I come across a one-of a kind, beautiful option, I usually discover that it is vintage (vintage typically means that the item is anywhere between 20-50 years old). Then I look at the price tag and wonder, “are vintage rugs worth it?”
The price of a vintage rug can run a few hundred dollars to several thousand, but their unique look and usually handcrafted natural materials may be worth the investment. Also, many vintage rugs come in rich colors, so they can add a warmth to a space through their color and texture. So, here are my picks that I think are warm and worth it.
Not all of these are true vintage; but they each have a vintage-inspired element. Keep reading to learn about 7 vintage rugs to perk up your space and worth the investment!
I absolutely adore this Tamsa Rug from Room & Board. While it is not vintage, it has the vintage look with its rich colors, tassels, and tight, flat weave. It is handwoven in India, and it is 100 percent wool. I’ve had a few 100 percent wool rugs. I used them as runners, and I was so impressed with their durability, even after years in our hallway. This item comes in a variety of sizes and shapes. I’m quite partial to red- in fact, I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to my hunt for red rugs (but I also include rust and orange rugs there as well, so check it out)!
I was surprised by the price too! I thought that it would be much more expensive, but the 5×8 option comes in just under 400 bucks! I thought that was a bargain for the material and craftsmanship.
This Etsy find is gorgeous and huge! It is a 6×10 Turkish rug from BievRugs. This is a true vintage rug from the 1970s, handcrafted in Turkey. It is a wool and cotton blend, and the colors are simply stunning, making this an excellent pick to perk up a space. I love the tassels because they make this piece stand out as a true vintage piece. I thought the price was excellent for the size, coming in at just over 500 bucks. The store has excellent reviews, too!
The Bungalow Rose Persei Oriental Orange Area Rug from Wayfair was an unexpected surprise for me in my hunt for worthy vintage rugs. Obviously, this is not vintage. It is a wool and polyester blend, and it is machine crafted. It comes in a variety of sizes too, and it is a more expensive than most items on this list. But I thought that I would include it because of the design and rich red and orange tones. Just a note, one reviewer mentioned that it is more red than orange in real life.
I found this Traditional Coral Orange Area Rug on Walmart! It is very inexpensive, and you can buy a 5×7 for about 300 bucks. Again, it is obviously not vintage, but the design and colors give the warmth of a vintage rug. It is chenille, and it is completely machine washable, so this may be the best option for a house with lots of pets and kids. Like most machine washable rugs, the printed look can be a bit distracting, but using this rug under a dining table would be a great choice.
Another Etsy find was this beautiful Overdyed Orange area rug from MURPYH. The shop has great reviews. I did observe that this piece is printed, but the look is simply stunning. The rug is also on the smaller side, at 2’6″x 4’9″. Perhaps in an all white kitchen or with grey or blue painted cabinets, this would warm up the space beautifully.
I love everything about this rug! The Vintage Floral Handmade Anatolian Rug Over-Dyed in Orange from RugsCarpetsRunners is a true vintage piece from the 1960s, and it is a wonderful size, coming in at just under 7×10. It is a wool and cotton blend, and it even has short tassels which really highlight the vintage age. I have been searching for a rust, orange color rug to add some warmth and joy to our grey living room space that hardly sees any sun. I think this may be our choice!
This beautiful Vulko Vintage Turkish Rug from Revival is so interesting and rich with color and design. I love how the warm tones are more subdued without shocking the eyes. It is inviting, comforting, and well-worn. It looks truly comfortable, as it is 100 percent wool. It is one-of-a-kind, and it was handcrafted in Turkey. I absolutely love the short tassels on this, and it also comes in a nice size at 4’7″x9’7″. This is a bit of a splurge at just under 500 bucks, but this is definitely worth it.
Because our home is so small, the decision I make about the rug in our living room will affect the runners in our hallway that we are currently giving a refresh. I also think a rug can add a pop of color in an otherwise neutral room with plenty of beige, white, cream and tan pieces. I really want to keep our home calm and serene, but still give a pop of color through area rugs. I especially want the rug to add warmth and the feeling of sunshine when there is no real sunshine outside during our long Chicago winters.
What do you think of these beautiful options? Which would you choose for a statement piece to warm up a living room?
