Moving to a region that has snowy winters is a major adjustments for humans and dogs. Now that we are on our 3rd winter in Chicago, I have learned some important tips about how to care for our 7 year-old lab/ pit-bull mix during this brutal season. The tips I share are really all about keeping your dog’s skin warm, dry, and moisturized. Of course, these tips vary depending on breed, age, and of course the severity of the cold. Additionally, it is best to visit with a veterinarian first to ensure your dog is getting the best care!
Boots
We have tried several types of boots, and we keep coming back to these from PawZ. At first, we wanted to buy some longer-lasting boots that have velcro at the ankles; however, these were a letdown! The boots kept slipping off our dog, especially if we did actually have to trudge through high snow accumulation. We’ve only had luck with the boots from PawZ, and while they are disposable, they are fine to take on a several walks before they need to be thrown out. They have never slipped off our dog’s paws, and they have a thick, balloon-type look and feel. They are durable, safe, and do the job. They also come in cute colors, because a dog wearing shoes is just plain awesome. Right now, our dog is wearing purple =)
Water-Proof Jacket
I wouldn’t advise buying a water-proof jacket for your dog online unless you’re absolutely certain of the fit or you’re purchasing the same brand and style as one your dog has had before. When we bought our dog’s jacket, we went into a local pet store because our dog has so many curves that we knew she would have to try on a couple. We settled on a similar style as this one from Pet’s Mart. What I like about this jacket is that it is easy to put on our dog and take off because of the zipper closure. It also has reflective lights built into the coat along the seams that can turn on and off with a button (note that the one I linked doesn’t mention this feature). What I would definitely recommend is purchasing one with a hood, zipper and bright colors for nighttime walks. Also, many options include pockets and storage for doggy waste bags as well.
One of the most important things to consider is water-proof material. Even a light snow can build a wet and brutally cold layer on a flannel coat that is dangerous for dogs to endure in harsh winter temperatures.
Humidifier
The first winter in Chicago was tough on our dog. The radiators in our building at the time ran so warm, and because she lays on the floor, she was in their path constantly. This dried out her skin so much, and she soon developed dandruff. She was in obvious discomfort, and this even led to more health/ skin issues, especially redness, swelling, and even bleeding. The vet recommended that we have a humidifier near her to moisturize her skin. This, along with other interventions, really made a huge difference!
Humidifiers are so great for humans, too! The dry winter air is brutal on our skin, so this will be a wonderful addition to the home for everyone. I highly recommend THIS humidifier from AIRROBO. It has convenient features, such as quiet functioning, rotating nozzle, and an extended run-time! However, the most important feature to our family was the top-fill design. When you have to take a tank over to the sink, let me tell you, expect water spill on the floor, counters, as well as the tabletop where the humidifier sits. With a top-fill design, you can bring the water to the tank itself, and spills are not an issue!
Pet-Safe Salt
We learned the hard way that regular snow-melting salt is dangerous for dog’s paws. The brands of ice-melt that don’t specify as “pet safe” can dry out a dog’s sensitive paw pads and lead to itching, cracking, and even bleeding. This was the worst when it happened to our dog, and we quickly learned that we had to purchase pet safe products to treat our driveway and sidewalks. Even though we do our diligence on our own property, your neighbors and the city you live in may not use pet safe products, so that is why it is important to keep your dog’s paws protected with boots anytime pavements and streets have been salted.
Salmon Oil
Reportedly, the effects of salmon oil on dogs are many. These include anti-inflammation, allergy relief, and a healthy coat. We would typically add 2 tablespoons into every one of our dog’s meals. The effects were pretty remarkable, and while it is a bit pricey, a trip to the vet is astronomical.
I hope these recommendations are helpful as you are preparing for the chilling days and nights ahead. And if you haven’t yet checked out my post on how to dress yourself for a Chicago winter, than I highly recommend that as well! Happy Winter!
