I know I’ve been already been writing a ton about fall, but in this post, I want to share 11 free or inexpensive things to do in fall. As a family of 4, we’ve found ways to fully embrace this enchanting season without emptying our wallets. So, whether you’re in the heart of Chicago or anywhere else, let’s dive into the unique charm of autumn on a budget.
1. Savor Seasonal Flavors:
Autumn is all about indulging in the rich and comforting flavors that the season brings. Whether you’re in Chicago or anywhere else, start by exploring local farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce. For a Windy City twist, check out the Green City Market in Lincoln Park, West Loop, or Avondale, where you can pick up everything from heirloom apples to artisanal pumpkin treats.
2. Take a Scenic Drive or Bike Ride:
One of the best ways to soak in the fall beauty is by hitting the road or the trails. Plan a scenic drive through the countryside to see the changing leaves, or if you’re in Chicago, take a bike ride along Lake Michigan’s picturesque shoreline- Lakefront Trail. The Lakefront Trail offers nearly 20 miles of stunning views of the city skyline and the lake framed by vibrant foliage. If all the city sights are not your thing, try the North Shore Channel Trail.
3. Host a Fall Picnic:
Gather your friends or family for a charming fall picnic. Pack a basket with your favorite snacks and sandwiches, and head to a nearby park or nature reserve. In Chicago, Grant Park’s Buckingham Fountain provides a stunning backdrop, surrounded by trees that turn into a brilliant sea of red and gold. Humboldt Park is also gorgeous in the fall- don’t miss the lagoons connected by a prairie river, a formal garden guarded by two buffalos, as well as the sport fields and amazing architecture.
4. Try Your Hand at Pumpkin Carving:
Pumpkin carving is a timeless fall tradition. Whether you’re in the suburbs or the heart of Chicago, visit a pumpkin patch to pick out the perfect canvas for your masterpiece. If you are looking to drive, consider visiting Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm, where you can also enjoy hayrides and apple picking. But there are plenty of apple orchards, pumpkin patches, or corn mazes near Chicago! And if you want to cook with fresh pumpkin, check out THIS post!
5. Embrace Fall Fashion:
Fall is the season of cozy fashion, no matter where you live. Invest in a stylish trench coat, a warm knit sweater, or a pair of fashionable boots to stay comfy and chic. If you’re in Chicago, visit secondhand shops for fall blazers, sweaters, jeans, and scarves. A local favorite with multiple locations is Crossroads Trading Company.
6. Create DIY Fall Decor:
Get crafty and bring the beauty of fall into your home. Gather leaves, acorns, and pinecones from your surroundings and transform them into wreaths, candle holders, or garlands. For Chicago-specific inspiration, visit the Art Institute of Chicago (free for many) to explore their fall-themed events.
7. Attend a Fall Festival:
Fall festivals are a fantastic way to celebrate the season’s spirit. Look for local festivals, craft fairs, or farmers’ markets in your area. If you’re in Chicago, don’t miss the renowned Apple Fest in Lincoln Square, where you can enjoy apple-themed treats and live music.
8. Cozy Up with a Blanket and Stargaze:
As the nights grow longer, take advantage of the clear, crisp skies. Grab a blanket, a thermos of hot cocoa, and head to a nearby park or your backyard to stargaze. In Chicago, the Adler Planetarium (free every Wednesday afternoon and evening) offers unique stargazing events and unparalleled views of the night sky.
9. Bake Autumnal Treats:
Embrace your inner baker and whip up some fall-inspired treats like apple pies, pumpkin spice cookies, or cinnamon rolls. Whether you’re in the city or suburbs, the aroma of these delicious creations will fill your home with warmth and coziness. If you want the best pies in Chicago this fall, and you’re willing to split the cost with a friend, try Hoosier Mama. It is the ultimate cozy treat for a fall day in the city. And if you’re hankering for more fall tastes, try the fall soups from THIS post.
10. Take a Scenic Hike:
Experience the beauty of fall foliage with a scenic hike. Research trails near your location or, if you’re in Chicago, explore the Palos Trail System, where you’ll find serene forested paths perfect for a fall adventure.
11. Volunteer for a Good Cause:
Autumn is an ideal time to give back to your community. Find local volunteer opportunities, such as food drives, clothing donations, or neighborhood cleanups. If you’re in Chicago, consider joining a volunteer event at a local shelter or community center, spreading warmth and kindness to those in need.
What fall activities are you looking forward to? Even if you live somewhere like I used to (where traditional fall doesn’t quite happen), there are still ways to celebrate the season in ways that make you feel cozy and at home.
