Let’s talk about Chicago’s “fake spring”! This is my third spring in the city, and it didn’t take long for me to realize how undecided and hesitant the season of renewal, rebirth, and rejuvenation would be. This is because Chicago’s “fake spring” season can trick you into thinking that winter is finally over, only to be followed by a sudden return of cold and snowy weather. Just this week, we had temperatures soar into the 80s, and we barbecued and did work in our garden; however, just the next day, snow is falling and our cars will need a good brushing off before heading out! In this post, I want to share what I’ve learned about this season, and how you can make peace with the uncommitted season.
Why Chicago Has a Fake Spring Season
Lake Michigan’s Impact on Weather
One of the main reasons for Chicago’s fake spring season is the city’s location. Chicago is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, which has a significant impact on its weather patterns. During the winter months, the lake freezes over, which can lead to colder temperatures and more snowfall. However, as the weather starts to warm up, the ice on the lake begins to melt, which can cause sudden shifts in temperature and weather patterns.
Jet Stream’s Impact on Weather
Another factor that contributes to Chicago’s fake spring season is the jet stream. The jet stream is a narrow band of strong winds that blows from west to east across the United States. It can have a significant impact on weather patterns, and when it shifts, it can cause sudden changes in temperature and precipitation.
Average Fluctuations During Chicago Spring
According to “Weather Spark,” “Daily high temperatures increase by 31°F, from 40°F to 71°F, rarely falling below 28°F or exceeding 83°F. Daily low temperatures increase by 29°F, from 29°F to 58°F, rarely falling below 17°F or exceeding 68°F.” In summary, it is not uncommon to experience 30 degree weather fluctuations in a day. More about how to plan for this temperature fluctuation below!
The Frustration of Chicago’s Fake Spring Season
Despite the optimism that comes with the start of Chicago’s fake spring season, it is usually followed by a return of cold and snowy weather. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop back down to freezing or for a snowstorm to hit in March or even April! Our first year here, the last snow was in May! This can be incredibly frustrating for Chicago residents who are ready for winter to be over and are eager to start enjoying spring.
Embracing Chicago’s Fake Spring Season
Despite the challenges of Chicago’s fake spring season, there are still plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The city is filled with beautiful parks and gardens that come to life in the springtime. The Lincoln Park Conservatory, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the Chicago Botanic Garden are just a few examples of the city’s beautiful green spaces.
Spring is also a great time to explore Chicago’s many neighborhoods and cultural attractions. The city’s museums, theaters, and galleries are always putting on new and exciting exhibits and performances. And with the warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to explore the city’s many outdoor markets, festivals, and events.
How to Prepare for Chicago’s Fake Spring Season
If you’re planning a visit to Chicago during the spring, it’s important to be prepared for the city’s unpredictable weather. Make sure to bring layers and a waterproof jacket, as well as comfortable waterproof shoes for walking around the city. And don’t forget to pack a hat and sunglasses, as the sun can be surprisingly strong even on cooler days. I have a post all about how to dress for a Chicago winter that has helpful suggestions for wet and cold weather.
Here’s what I carry with me in a small backpack if I’ll be out for the day during spring: light jacket or great sweater (packable), small umbrella, light scarf, sunglasses, and a baseball cap or hat for shade.
I also highly recommend having distinct plan A and B options depending on the weather. Check out what the city’s outdoor options are, and if the weather is great, go for it! However, make sure you have a list of indoor activities planned in case that snow storm hits.
Embrace the Unpredictability of Chicago’s Fake Spring Season
Despite the challenges of Chicago’s fake spring season, there is something undeniably special about this time of year. It’s a time of transition, when the city is waking up from its long winter slumber and starting to come alive again. And while the weather may be unpredictable, the spirit of the city is always strong and resilient.
