I love furniture and décor with a story and history. In fact, displaying sentimental items in our homes can actually make us happier! I also love touring sentimental homes online for inspiration (all the photos on this post are sourced from charming tours that have special furniture and décor pieces from family and friends).
I try to make every piece in our home count, but sometimes sentimental furniture can be as challenging as it is rewarding. As our lives evolve, so do our styles, needs, and spaces. Over time, that once-charming heirloom may now be contributing to a cluttered room that lacks the aesthetic cohesion you desire.
Just this morning, as I was tidying up the mess of our dining room to guest room/ office renovation, I nearly tripped over a large arm chair and ottoman that my daughters lovingly named “pumpkin” and “sweet potato,” respectively. These two pieces have been around since they were in elementary school, and the rich rust colored velvet fabric was a custom upholstery job I had done in Texas.
This chair has been a place of refuge for each one of us, and we often curl up here for a time of solitude to read or scroll.
But the chair is not working in our very small 1,000 square foot home. It is cumbersome and much too big for our living room. And forget about it moving to a bedroom!
When I tried to sell the pair last fall, my girls pleaded with me to keep them, so I relented.
When sentimentality is at work, I struggle with knowing when it’s time to bid adieu to these cherished items, as I’m sure many of you do, too.
So I came up with some ideas about how to declutter and learn when and how to let go of sentimental furniture while maintaining the essence of your space.
Recognizing the Clutter Conundrum
We’ve all been there – the room that started as a cozy nook has slowly transformed into a labyrinth of items, each with its own backstory. While sentimentality is a beautiful thing, overcrowding can lead to chaos. One of the most telling signs that it’s time to reevaluate your sentimental furniture is when your room starts to feel cramped. If you can’t walk freely without navigating an obstacle course of chairs and side tables, it’s probably time to consider a change.
Embracing Aesthetics and Cohesion
Every room tells a story, and your space should be no different. However, when sentimental furniture clashes with your desired aesthetics, it might be a sign that a transition is in order. That bold Victorian armchair might hold precious memories, but if it stands out like a sore thumb in your modern minimalist living room, it could be affecting the overall feel of the space. Striking a balance between cherished pieces and a harmonious décor scheme is key to curating an inviting atmosphere.
Navigating Wear and Tear
Time has a way of leaving its mark on even the most cherished belongings. A sun-faded couch, a coffee table with nicks and scratches, or a chair that’s seen one too many moves – while these imperfections add character, they can also compromise both the appearance and functionality of your space. Assess the condition of your sentimental furniture. If wear and tear hinder its use or contribute to an unkempt appearance, it might be time to consider alternative options.
The Delicate Art of Decluttering
So, you’ve recognized the signs and are ready to take action. Decluttering isn’t about erasing memories; it’s about creating space for new ones. But how can you say goodbye without feeling guilty? Start by selecting a few cherished pieces that truly resonate with you and reflect your current style. These items can be retained to create a curated vignette that highlights their sentimental value. The rest? Here are some surprising ways to bid adieu:
1. Upcycling and Repurposing: Turn old furniture into functional art. Transform an antique chest into a statement coffee table or give new life to a weathered door as a unique headboard.
I’ve seen this happen plenty of times online, especially with well-made desks and tables repurposed into beautiful bathroom vanities. Just look at the vanity below from Noting Grace as an example of what is possible! They turned a beautiful antique wash stand into a unique and upscale bathroom vanity.
2. Gift to Loved Ones: Share the sentiment with family and friends. Passing on a beloved piece to someone who will treasure it can ease the separation process.
3. Donate with Purpose: Support a cause by donating furniture to shelters or community centers. This not only reduces clutter but also extends the legacy of your pieces to those in need.
Consider homeless shelters or immigrant resettlement shelters that need comfortable furniture for those starting a new life. The thought that someone could enjoy the sentimental item as much as we do if very rewarding and helps letting go of the piece a bit easier!
4. Local Artists and Craftsmen: Collaborate with local artisans to breathe new life into your furniture. A skilled carpenter can transform an old dresser into a functional work of art.
One idea I had was making a pillow out of the rust colored velvet fabric from the arm chair. That way, my daughters can still have a piece of their sentimental chair that they can relax with.
5. Virtual Memories: Take photographs of your sentimental pieces before letting them go. Create a digital album that allows you to revisit these memories whenever you want.
For example, I could frame a small photo of my daughters on “pumpkin” and “sweet potato” and display it as a keepsake.
How about You?
As you embark on this journey of decluttering and letting go, remember that the choice is personal and should align with your values and aspirations. It’s more than just rearranging furniture; it’s about creating a space that nurtures your soul.
