In a world dominated by instant messaging and social media, the art of snail mail (handwritten letters that arrive in the mailbox) has become increasingly rare. Yet, there’s something undeniably special about receiving a personal, heartfelt letter in the mail.
While technology has made communication more convenient, it can lack the warmth and personal touch that a snail mail letter brings.
I know that I wrote many, many letters to my family and friends in Texas when I first moved to Chicago. I used snail mail as a way of connecting through letter writing. Because of that, I’ve learned how to craft meaningful letters that will strengthen connections and bring joy to both sender and receiver.
Benefits of Snail Mail
- Tangible Connection: Unlike digital messages that can easily get lost in the sea of notifications, snail mail provides a physical connection. Holding a letter in your hands creates a unique bond, allowing you to feel the sender’s presence in a tangible way.
- Thoughtful Expression: Taking the time to write a letter demonstrates thoughtfulness and care. It shows that you value the recipient enough to devote time and effort to crafting a meaningful message.
- Surprise and Delight: In an era of instant gratification, receiving a letter unexpectedly is a delightful surprise. Opening the mailbox to find a handwritten envelope amidst the bills and junk mail is a heartwarming experience that brings joy and anticipation.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics of crafting a snail mail letter that will make your loved ones feel cherished and appreciated:
- Choose Beautiful Stationery: Selecting the right stationery sets the stage for an aesthetically pleasing letter. Opt for paper that reflects your personality or the recipient’s taste. It could be delicate floral patterns, minimalist designs, or even handmade paper for a unique touch.
- Create your own beautiful stationary: the blog Naomi Loves has amazing mail art ideas and templates as well. I think this far surpasses any beautiful stationary you could buy. Most of the envelope art in this post is sourced from her blog.
- Start with a Warm Greeting: Begin your letter with a heartfelt salutation that captures your relationship with the recipient. Address them by their name and add a personal touch, such as “Dearest Sarah” or “Hey Grandma.”
- Share Genuine Stories and Memories: To deepen your connection, share personal anecdotes, memories, or experiences that you and the recipient have shared. Recall happy moments, funny incidents, or even struggles that you’ve overcome together. By referencing these shared experiences, you’ll create a bond that transcends distance and time.
Example: “Remember the time we got caught in that unexpected rainstorm during our beach vacation? We laughed so hard as we huddled under the tiny beach umbrella, drenched but full of joy.”
- Express Gratitude: Take a moment to express gratitude for the recipient’s presence in your life. Acknowledge their support, kindness, or guidance and let them know how much it means to you. Genuine appreciation can strengthen your bond and bring a smile to their face.
Example: “I wanted to take a moment to thank you for always being there for me, especially during those challenging times. Your unwavering support and words of wisdom have made a world of difference in my life.”
- Ask Thoughtful Questions: To keep the conversation flowing, include open-ended questions that encourage the recipient to share their thoughts and experiences. Show genuine interest in their life and let them know you value their perspective.
Example: “How have you been spending your weekends lately? Any new hobbies or activities you’ve discovered that bring you joy?”
- Enclose Mementos: To add a personal touch, include small mementos that hold special meaning to you and the recipient. It could be a pressed flower from a memorable hike, a ticket stub from a concert you attended together, or a polaroid picture that captures a cherished moment.
- End with Warm Wishes: Conclude your letter with warm wishes and expressions of love. Let the recipient know that you are thinking of them and send positive vibes their way.
Example: “Sending you lots of love and warm hugs from across the miles. Wishing you endless joy and happiness in the days ahead.”

I loved this blog….I remember writing letters to my boyfriend who is now my husband, when he was attending college. It was a way of writing your most heart thoughts on a paper and at the end of my letter I would spray a dot of my perfume so he would remember those sweet days we would spent together. Other times I would imprint my lipstick kiss at my closing of my letter, wonderful memories.
